Tips for Domain Selection

Common steps when selecting your domain name(s):

    • Go to WHOIS (http://www.whois.net/) or any domain registrar's website (like Godaddy.com) and enter the various domain names you might like. The tool will  show if the domain name is available to purchase.
    • Some registrar's suggest additional variations for domains. Generally, Godaddy.com or Bluehost.com offer reasonable prices. They will also bug you when time to renew.
    • Before you buy the domain, thoroughly read the terms and conditions of the registrar.

They need to abide by the guidelines of the ICANN and make sure you can redirect name servers or DNS if needed in the future.

    • Don't feel pressured to buy the domain immediately, unless you feel the name is in high demand. Short and sweet domain names are good.
    • Does purchasing the common misspellings for your domain work?
The domain price can be affordable - when you consider missing a customer because they can't spell well. Point that misspelled domain to the one correctly spelled.
    • DOES THE REGISTRAR have a PHONE NUMBER? Can you CALL if you NEED HELP?
    • DOUBLE CHECK SPELLING OF DOMAIN, is it correct?
    • If so, press the BUY button. In most cases, you type it wrong, buy it, you own it!
    • IGNORE SCAMS that send a bill for a large amount for your domain. It may sound urgent and sound legit!
    • KNOW WHERE YOU REGISTERED or PURCHASED your domain. Watch for notices about renewals or changes to terms from that company.

There are several good places to buy your domain name. Buying more than one year indicates confidence in your business. Read the terms and go for it!

Consider a private domain registration if you have a home business or are using the website for a personal website. This may reduce the amount of spam or unwanted contacts that come as a result of registering a domain name. It often costs extra.
